"Hold the planet Mars in your hands!"

Mars at Your Fingertips

About

From your friends at Astronomy in Motion
This VR Object is unlike other virtual-reality Mars models. Here, the Sun's light comes from the side. It's the best way to see Mars' subtle and complex surface detail, as you would from orbit. Hotspots link to narrated videos that describe Mars' principal attractions as well as all landing and crash sites from 1971 through 2023. May you enjoy using this VR Mars object as much as we did making it!

Our Story

I've been obsessed with planets since I looked through my first telescope and saw a pterosaur fly over the moon. In 2016 the United Astronomy Clubs of New Jersey honored my decades of presentations to their visitors by dedicating the Lonny Buinis Observatory. I hold degrees in physics and computer science from Stevens Institute of Technology, but I have family and smarter friends who keep me humble. I'm a member of the International Association of Astronomical Artists, whose artworks have inspired me. I enjoy pushing the limits of existing technologies (I started airbrushing acrylic paints immediately after I was told I shouldn't). Now I specialize in making 3-D planets you can explore with your fingers. This VR Mars wouldn't have been possible without invaluable help from my wife and narrator, Jan Buinis, and musician Don Slepian. I hope from our efforts you enjoy the short, snappy videos that explain Mars' main attractions and every landing and crash site. "Hold the planet Mars in your hands!"
